Nano-Biofertilisers for Sustainable
Agriculture in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions
Nano-biofertilisers offer a promising,
eco-friendly solution for sustainable agriculture,
and are well-suited to the arid and semi-arid
regions of North Africa.
By combining bio-based or biodegradable nanomaterials, nutrients and beneficial microorganisms, they promote the controlled release of nutrients, improve their uptake by plants and help to enhance the biological fertility of the soil.
This approach can reduce the use of chemical fertilisers, limit nutrient losses and mitigate environmental impacts.
In a context characterised by water stress, soil salinisation, high temperatures and dependence on imported inputs, nano-biofertilisers can enhance the resilience of production systems.
Their production from local biomass and by-products also supports the circular economy.
However, their adoption requires a rigorous assessment of their effectiveness, environmental safety and economic viability under real-world growing conditions.
